You will come across many more deaths as medical students and as doctors. It’s disheartening that your first encounter with death is that of a dear classmate and good friend. We try to save everyone, the ones who deserve to live, and even those who don’t. But we’re just doctors, and we can only do so much. We don’t just “move on” like ordinary people do. With each death, we are reminded of how fragile life is, how it is never ours to begin with. We are wounded. We never forget. That’s what pushes us to strive harder, to become better healers. And that’s the best way to remember the ones we never get to save.
— Dr. Ronnie Baticulon, on the sudden, devastating death of our dear friend Darryl Martin.
